Introduction to Nartiang Monoliths

Hidden deep within the lush hills of Meghalaya, the Nartiang Monoliths stand as a testament to the region’s ancient history and cultural significance. These towering stone structures are an awe-inspiring sight, each one steeped in mystery and meaning. Located in the West Jaintia Hills district, near the town of Jowai, Nartiang Monoliths are a collection of megalithic stone structures that are considered sacred by the Khasi tribe.  The monoliths themselves vary in size, with the tallest reaching an impressive 8 meters. These stones are not just geological formations but are imbued with profound cultural and spiritual significance, believed to represent ancestors or to mark important events. Visitors to Nartiang are often left mesmerized by the sheer magnitude and mystery surrounding these monolithic giants.

About Nartiang Monoliths

The Nartiang Monoliths are one of the most impressive megalithic sites in India. The area is home to around 30 stone structures, most of which are tall upright stones, although some are shaped in a way that suggests they were used for ritual purposes. These monoliths are believed to have been erected by the Khasi people over a thousand years ago, though their exact purpose is still debated. Some scholars believe they were used for religious ceremonies, while others think they served as markers for important events or as commemorations of ancestors.

How to Reach Nartiang Monoliths

By Road: The monoliths are about 12 km from Jowai, which is well-connected to Shillong, located 65 km away. From Shillong, visitors can take a bus or hire a taxi to Jowai, enjoying scenic views of Meghalaya’s hills and valleys along the way. Local transport options, including shared cabs or private taxis, are available from Jowai to the monoliths.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Guwahati, around 160 km from Shillong. From Guwahati, travelers can take a bus or taxi to Shillong, then proceed to Jowai by road to reach the monoliths.

By Air: The closest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi), approximately 80 km from Jowai. Guwahati Airport, which offers more flights, is about 160 km from Shillong. From either airport, visitors can hire a taxi or take a bus to Shillong and continue to Jowai by road.

Once in Jowai, visitors can reach the Nartiang Monoliths via a short drive or cab ride, followed by a peaceful walk through the village to the site.
