All about the Kudremukh Trek with Waterfalls.

    Hello Trekkers!

Kudremukh is one of the highest peaks in Karnataka, located in the heart of Kudremukh National Park. The name Kudremukh is derived from the side view of this mountain that resembles the Horse face. If trekking in the dense green western ghats is in your wishlist, this is the trek for you.

Kudremukh attracts trekkers from all over India. There is a rule set by the forest department that only 50 trekkers are allowed on any given day. There is no prior booking or reservation, and the only way to do the trek is by presenting ourselves at the checkpoint early in the morning around 6 AM. Because of the mad rush created these days on Saturdays, many trekkers usually go back with empty hands, disappointed.

To give ourselves the best chance of doing Kudremukh trek, we will attempt this trek on Sunday when the crowd is way lesser according to our research.

We will start the trip from Bangalore on Saturday early morning, stop by for a quick breakfast, and play lots of interesting games on board. As we hit the mountains, we will finish our Lunch and directly head to Tender Coconut waterfalls. By late evening we shall check into a trekkers homestay with very basic amenities. The location of the homestay is heavenly surrounded by tall trees, rich vegetation, and green hills. After sipping a hot cup of tea, we will chill out for some time and rest early.

On Day 2, we will wake up early, mark our attendance at the forest check post close to the homestay to start our journey towards King Kudremukh. The initial part of the trek passes through dense forests interspersed with flowing streams of crystal clear water. Crossing these streams is fun, with slippery rocks and chilling water wetting our shoes. This jungle is followed by green carpets of endless grasslands welcoming trekkers onto smooth hill slopes, one above another as if they are meticulously arranged by nature. Kudremukh trek is a serene experience, in spite of the challenge it offers. After all, finishing a 20 Km mountain hike in the diverse terrain of Kudremukh is no mean feat for everybody.

You might have gotten doubt already, what if in a worst-case scenario, we aren’t allowed to trek to Kudremukh on Sunday. In this case, trekkers have an alternative Kurinjal Trek which is also in Kudremukh National Park and equally beautiful as well as challenging as Kudremukh trek. Because of the special case scenario of Kudremukh that is explained above, we cannot 100% promise Kudremukh trek.

    Highlights of Kudremukh Trip:

Only 50 trekkers are allowed on any given day for Kudremukh trek. There is no prior booking or reservation, and the only way to do the trek is by presenting ourselves at the checkpoint early in the morning around 6 AM. Because of the popularity of trek, usually more than 200 trekkers on average end up on Saturday morning at the check post. Many trekkers usually go back with empty hands, disappointed.

To give ourselves the best chance of doing Kudremukh trek, we will attempt this trek on Sunday when the crowd is way lesser according to our research.

Because of this special case scenario, we cannot 100% promise Kudremukh trek.

In this rare scenario, we will do Kurinjal Peak trek which is also in the Kudremukh National Park and is equally beautiful and challenging as Kudremukh trek. Kurinjal also has a thrilling ridge walk.

It falls under the “hard” category of treks in western ghats. Trekkers have to cover almost 20 Km up and down in a single day. The trek starts from the forest office at base camp early in the morning around 8 AM. There is a deadline of 6 PM to return to base camp.

It’s about a 10 Km hike. That makes it around 20 Km trek up and down. Most of the trek path is at a steady inclination that takes time to climb up. Expect lots of rain, muddy trails, leeches. Because of the slippery path, it takes time to climb down also. Typically trekkers take 9 hours to finish the Kudremukh trek.

The months from Jun to Sept are special for Kudremukh monsoon trek. It’s a great experience this time for the people who don’t care about getting drenched.
The months of Oct to Feb are very good to trek with clear skies, pleasant weather. Water will be available throughout the season at Elaneeru waterfalls.
