Hello travelers!

Nestled among the mountains of the western ghats, Wayanad is one of the loveliest hill stations of southern India. There are many good things about Wayanad like full of greenery, misty mountains, wildlife sanctuaries, lakes, dams, waterfalls, tea estates, coffee estates, panoramic views, and top of it all – pleasant climate most of the year. With its rich flora and fauna, Wayanad is part of the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve. Wayanad is actually a large district that has varying altitudes between 700 meters and 2100 meters above sea level, which will appear in its climate as you pass by.

Well, if Wayanad is so big, then where all are we heading to?

We will start with our favorite place – waterfalls. Surrounded by greenery all around, the cool sparkling waters of Soochipara waterfalls will surely refresh your body. The falls are separated into different tiers making it look pretty. It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours easily.

An offbeat place called 900-Kandi, a pretty little secret of Wayanad which is not usually thronged by trekkers is next in our list. It is a lush green forest accompanied by grand views of rolling hills, making it ideal for trekking. There are some jeeps ferrying people up and down, but we will try to avoid them.

Places like Karlad Lake, Banasura Sagar and Edakkal Caves are few more tourist attractions we will tick off.
Banasura dam is believed to be the largest earthen dam in the country. It’s always a serene experience spending time in front of such a huge water body. The icing on the cake is the view of the huge Banasura hill in the backdrop.

Overall, Wayanad has many out-of-ordinary places, which we will run-into on this backpacking trip. It’s time not to wait anymore.

It’s time to savor this wonderful experience.

Highlights of the Wayanad Trip:

  • Soochipara Waterfalls
  • The thrills of 900-Kandi deep forest
  • Karlad Lake
  • Edakkal Caves exploration
  • Longest Zipline & Skycycle
  • Campfire with group activities 😍
  • Beautiful hill top stay
  • Lot’s of masti and lot’s of fun
  • Comfortable Sleeper or AC journey between Hyderabad <> Bangalore

Itinerary

  • Start from Hyderabad in the evening, an overnight journey to Bangalore.
  • Switch to private vehicle early in the morning.
  • We will start our journey to Wayanad if we reach Bangalore very early around 1AM – 5AM. But if we reach Bangalore after 5AM, then we will freshen up at a hotel in Bangalore before starting journey to Wayanad.
  • Reach Wayanad after crossing forest check post, freshen up and fuel up with authentic Kerala Breakfast.
  • Drive to Edakkal Caves base point, climb up, explore stone age carvings and enjoy a nice view from the top.
  • Visit very pretty Karlad Lake and spend some quality time.
  • Have Lunch at a local restaurant near Karlad. Note that food options are limited at this place.
  • Give an evening visit to Banasura Sagar Dam, explore the beautiful setting of Banasura mountain in the middle of Western Ghats
  • Reach our homestay located in an amazing hilltop setting by late evening.
  • There are two options for Dinner – either finish it on the way to homestay, or order at the homestay.
  • Bonfire with music between 8 to 10 PM (weather permits). After this, we have to respect nature in Wayanad and enjoy our social gathering by sharing stories and playing games.
  • Rest for the night in your assigned beds.
  • Wake up early morning, pack your bags, check out of our stay.
  • Have Breakfast.
  • Take a journey towards Soochipara waterfalls that has a pool at the base of the falls. We need to walk about a kilometer inside the forest to reach falls. Take a well deserved dip in the falls, if allowed by forest authorities at that time based on the flow of water and climate conditions.
  • Note: There is a Forest Department limit of 1200 tourists to visit Soochipara falls per day. Everyone must stand in queue and take tickets. That’s why we are going here first. If the ticket counter closes by the time we reach there, we cannot help it.
  • Visit Wayanad’s Longest Zipline & Skycycle adventure zone. Interested travelers may indulge in these adventure activities if they are open based on weather conditions. Note that on rainy days, the local authorities might stop these adventure activities and we cannot help it.
  • Finish quick Lunch at a local restaurant on the way.
  • Head towards 900-Kandi which is in deep forest. Plenty of jeeps ferry tourists up and down over here. This jeep ride is already included in the trip cost. Interested folks may visit the famous (but overrated) Wayanad glass bridge that protrudes into the valley.
  • Say Bye to Wayanad, start back towards Bangalore, stop for a Tea/Coffee break, reach by night (around 9PM) based on traffic conditions.
  • Catch return Bus to Hyderabad.
  • Reach home in the morning.
  • Share your experience of an action packed weekend trip to Wayanad with your friends and colleagues.

Seasonal variations:

  • Sept to Feb (winter): Intermittent rains greet us in Sept and Oct, but the hill station would be fresh and pretty after monsoons. Dry and pleasant climate starts from Nov till Feb. Nights will be cold in all the months. Plenty of water in streams and waterfalls. Best time for camping and to take dips. The sky is ripe for amazing sunrises and sunsets.
  • June to Aug (monsoon months): This is the wettest season. Wayanad gets plenty of rain during monsoons and is also prone to landslides. We don’t usually organize Wayanad in these months.
  • Mar to May (summer): Gets hot. We don’t usually organize Wayanad in these months.

What is the best time to travel to Wayanad?

  • 10 months of the year starting from June all the way till Feb is the best time to travel to Wayanad.
  • Monsoons (Jun to Sept) are intense in Wayanad with high rainfall. But the mountains turn green and waterfalls and rivers are at full flow.
  • Summers (Mar to May) are hot because of less altitude of Wayanad compared to other hill stations. Best to avoid.
