History of Mirjan Fort

One legend attributes its construction in the 16th century to Chennabhairav Devi, the Pepper Queen of Gersoppa under the Tuluva-Saluva clan. Her reign extended across North and South Kannada as well as South Goa districts. Following the Battle of Talikota in 1565, she relocated her seat of power to an island in the Sharavathi River and embraced Jainism, commissioning several Jain temples. The fort subsequently saw control pass to the Marathas in 1757 and later to the British in 1784.

Another account places the fort’s origins around 1200 A.D., suggesting it was built by the Nawayath Sultanates and later annexed by the Vijayanagara Empire. Alternatively, it’s said to have been constructed by Sherif-ul-Mulk, a nobleman from Bijapur, to safeguard Kumta and its southern Kumta Fort.
